Atul Kulkarni has chosen to be a terrorist in his Tolly debut...
A crowd gathers around Atul Kulkarni at Chowrasta in Darjeeling as Anjan Dutt trains his camera and shouts “action”. The feisty youth leader in Rang De Basanti has turned a terrorist caught in a dilemma in Dutt’s Hindi-English film Chowrasta: Crossroads of Love, also starring Victor Banerjee, Roopa Ganguly, Aparajita Ghosh Das and Saswata Chatterjee.

Chowrasta is your first Tollywood film...
Yes, Anjanda and I have been talking about working together for the past three years. I saw his Bow arracks Forever and The Bong Connection and found that the script and the characters form the basis of his films.

What drew you to Chowrasta?

The script; it’s excellent. Chowrasta has four different stories of love of differing intensities. Chowrasta is the point in Darjeeling where all the characters meet. There are precise dramatic scenes and I have a wonderful role. Both Anjanda and I believe that I haven’t done anything like this before.

I play Kenny, a terrorist. But the film is not about politics; that’s just the backdrop. Kenny becomes a terrorist for survival. He is actually helping other terrorists. And he is in a desperate situation; he is trying to get out of it. During this journey, he finds himself at the crossroads. He starts thinking about the past, the present and the future.

Are you comfortable working in an ensemble cast?

Acting can’t be done in solitude. Acting is basically reacting to an action and the more powerful your co-actor, the better is your own performance. Rang De Basanti wouldn’t have worked if Aamir (Khan) had been everything in the film. I have never felt insecure about it.

What kind of roles have you been getting post-Rang De Basanti?

Roles of youth leaders have been pouring in just as I got corrupt cop roles after Dum. And I can understand why it happens, from the director’s point of view.

See, most directors have the characters of other films in mind when they are casting for their films. They are very unsure and they want to be sure by following something that has worked. Very few directors can see the actor behind the character. Madhur Bhandarkar is one. He gave me underworld don Potiya Sawant in Chandni Bar and then journalist Vinayak Mane in Page 3. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is another. My role in his Dilli 6 is 180 degrees opposite to the one in Rang De Basanti.... So one has to keep saying no to the same kind of roles. You have to have patience.

What have you chosen after saying no to several films?

Dilli 6 is 90 per cent complete. It’s about the people of old Delhi, purani Delhi, and the film gets its name from the pin code of old Delhi. You can’t compare this film with anything else, not even Rang De Basanti. It has Waheeda Rehman, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri, Prem Chopra — actors from all generations. Working with such people has been a dream come true.

In Sagar Ballary’s Kachcha Limbu I am a stepfather to a teenager and married to a much older woman. In N. Chandra’s Yeh Mera India, I am a disillusioned communist, while in Farooque Kabir’s Allah Ke Bande I am someone who tries to bring the children of an underworld area into the mainstream. The common thing between all these films is that they have been handled by good storytellers.

Are you interested in doing a comedy film?

Yes, I am very keen on doing a Hindi comedy film. I have already done one in Marathi. It’s called Valu and it’s the highest grosser in Marathi films this year.

Any other offer from Bengal?

Buddhadeb Dasgupta has narrated a story recently and I have liked it. But we need to figure out the dates.
