I want to experiment

- Jeet is in search of good stories and new roles.

With just one release this year and only one more to come, Jeet is taking it easy. The lover boy on screen has become a homebody — reading books, watching films, working out and waiting to bounce back with two comedies.

You are scarcely seen at the studios these days...

Yes, I am not doing much at the moment because I am bored of doing the same stuff. Monotony has set in and I want to experiment, with not just my look but also with the role. It may not click in the beginning but I want to keep trying. Bengali cinema is in the process of a change at the moment. The tastes of the audience have changed and we must cater to that.

What kind of change?

Films like The Bong Connection and Anuranan have done exceptionally well in the multiplexes. It was a brilliant effort. Both films had very good marketing strategies. The commerce of Bengali films will change very soon.

What are you looking for in a script?

A good story, a good character. Something different, not the done-to-death stories. It has to be something that I can connect with. A film that will reach out to a lot of people and will be unanimously accepted.

Have you signed any film?

I will start shooting for Sankha Banerjee’s Hasi Khushi Club from May 25. It’s a comedy and I play the protagonist of a theatre group. Swastika is opposite me. Besides, Priyanka (Trivedi) and I will be doing a film together after a long time.

Saathi was the first Tollywood film for both of us. Shiboprasad Mukherjee is the director of the new film, tentatively titled Hello Memshaheb. This too is a comedy with a sweet love story. Partner, also with Swastika, will release soon.

Your only release this year, Jor, hasn’t done too well...

No, Jor did well. It recovered its cost. Actually this is a very lean phase in Bengali cinema. A good film is doing average business and an average film is doing bad business. There was a time when even average films did good business.

Is it because you teamed up with a newcomer?

I don’t think so. I have always worked with newcomers. I worked with Koel in her first film Nater Guru. It was my second film. I worked with Srabonti in Champion and with Resshmi Ghosh in Amar Mayer Shapath.

The buzz is that you want to work only with Swastika...

Not at all. Who said that? This is just gossip. I don’t really care about who is spreading such rumours.

Your first Bhojpuri film has done pretty well...

Yes, Pyar Jab Kehu Se Hoyi Jala did exceptionally well in parts of Bihar and offers are pouring in. There’s a Bhojpuri film to be produced by Shree Venkatesh Films.

What’s a day in Jeet’s life like when he is not shooting?

I get up in the morning and work out. I have a personal trainer and he comes everyday. If he is absent even for a day I get very fidgety. Plus, I am reading a lot and watching films. Currently I am reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.
