The sultry Sameera Reddy is enjoying her plain Jane look in Bengali films more than her glam girl image in Bollywood. After Kaalpurush, she is gearing up for the release of her second film with Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Aami Yasin Aar Amar Madhubala. Don’t you have similar roles in Kaalpurush and Aami Yasin Aar Amar Madhubala?Maybe they are, but I guess all Bengali women with a khopa and in a cotton sari look similar. The roles are such that I have similar looks. In The Voyeurs (Aami Yasin Aar Amar Madhubala), I am a girl from Behrampore who wants to be an actress. The similarity is in the simplicity of the two characters. Otherwise, Rekha in The Voyeurs and Supriya in Kaalpurush are very different from each other. Supriya is dissatisfied with her life as a mother and wife, while Rekha tries to be very modern. At times she wears a little make-up too. Supriya is a bitter woman, but Rekha is full of dreams and very positive. Did your Bengali get better while shooting the next film? Not really, but I breezed through The Voyeurs. I was very nervous while doing Kaalpurush. The Voyeurs was easier. I was very comfortable. Would you believe that I did not listen to the script even once and said yes? It’s only because of Dada (Buddhadeb). After Kaalpurush, he called me up to say that he wanted me in The Voyeurs and I immediately agreed. In fact I was so relaxed that I would give inputs on my role to Dada. So are you game for serious roles in Bollywood? Yes, why not? I always enjoy doing such roles. These two films are a landmark in my career. But I will continue doing the silly bimbette acts, like I did in Race. I’m sure no one is as dumb and as funny as my character in Race. After all, at the end of the day I am a Bollywood actress. Have your Bollywood friends seen the different you in Kaalpurush? No, since the films haven’t released in Mumbai, they haven’t. But some have seen clippings and they were shocked to see a completely different me. Directors Abbas-Mustan were surprised when they saw the stills of Kaalpurush. They asked me, “Sameera, what have you done?” I am now focussing more on such roles. There’s a film which I have already started shooting for. Red Alert is on the Naxal movement. I play a Naxal activist who is raped at a police station by cops. It’s also a no make-up look. How did you catch the fish fetish? Oh, rui is the tastiest fish I have ever had! We don’t get rui maachh back in Mumbai. Though my mum cooks very tasty Mangalorean fish curry, there’s something about rui. The last time I was in Calcutta to shoot for The Voyeurs, I was bored of staying in the hotel. So my parents made me shift to a friend of theirs in Ballygunge. They are Bengalis and they made me become a Bengali. I was with them for a month and everyday I would feast on fish. Besides, Prosenjit would bring big rosogollas to the sets and I had put on so much weight then! I never forget to buy mishti doi from Mithai either. It’s so yummy!
